Resuming Excavations at 38PN35
Dates
for the upcoming excavation season at archaeological site 38PN35, in
Pickens County, have been set. Work will begin on Monday, May 16 and
continue through Friday, June 10. The first week will be spent preparing
the site, removing fill from last years excavations, repairing
equipment, etc., and although all are welcome to come and assist, we
will not require volunteers that week. Beginning on Monday, the 23rd,
we will need a number of volunteers, and can use them for the remainder
of the excavations. Two excavations will
be conducted simultaneously; one will explore the Mississippian cultural
component; the palisade(s), structural remains, etc., and the other
will excavate the Archaic cultural components, which are buried deeper
in the ground. Both are equally interesting. To
alleviate the problems of travel for our volunteers, we are attempting
to acquire lodging for those that wish to stay overnight. For
those wishing to stay for an extended time, we would like to have the
dates that you plan to stay so that we can plan for lodging. Please send
me this information as soon as you have decided what you wish to do. We
are looking forward to a fun season of excavations and hope that many
of you will decide to join us.

Archaeological Field School on Edgefield, South Carolina Pottery Communities
The University of Illinois, in conjunction with a large group of researchers from South Carolina and elsewhere, will hold a field school at the site of Pottersville, one of the first Edgefield stoneware kilns, in May and June of 2011. This is a for credit class, but hours are transferable, and accommodations may be made for non-students.
